Ingredients
- 1.5 oz bourbon
- 0.5 oz spiced or aged rum
- 0.25 oz Averna (amaro)
- 0.25 oz demerara syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters
- 1 black ice sphere
- Garnish: wide orange peel, cinnamon stick
Build
- Stir bourbon, rum, Averna, syrup and bitters with ice for 20 seconds.
- Place the black sphere in the rocks glass.
- Strain over the sphere.
- Express the orange peel over the drink and tuck it in beside the sphere.
- Toast the cinnamon stick with a torch for 3 seconds, blow it out, and rest it across the rim smoking.
Zero-proof twin
2 oz chilled black tea, 1 oz apple cider, 0.25 oz demerara syrup, 2 dashes non-alcoholic aromatic bitters, over the same black sphere.Prep. stir food-safe black gel coloring into water until fully opaque, fill 2-inch sphere molds, freeze overnight. As it melts it slowly darkens the drink, which is part of the joke. Don't use activated charcoal; it can interfere with medications.
Batch for 8. 12 oz bourbon, 4 oz rum, 2 oz Averna, 2 oz demerara, 16 dashes Angostura, 8 dashes orange bitters, 6 oz water for dilution. Bottle and refrigerate; pour 3.5 oz over each sphere.
